California Proposition 65

WARNING

This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

What is Proposition 65?

The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, commonly known as Proposition 65 or Prop 65, is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

Why Are Firearms Products Labeled?

Many firearms, ammunition, and related products contain or produce chemicals listed under Proposition 65, including lead and lead compounds. Discharging firearms in poorly ventilated areas, cleaning firearms, and handling ammunition may expose users to lead and other listed chemicals. These warnings are required by California law for products sold or distributed in California.

Products That May Require Warnings

  • Firearms and firearm components
  • Ammunition (lead-based projectiles and primers)
  • Cleaning solvents and lubricants
  • Certain holsters and accessories (containing chemicals such as DEHP)
  • Gun range equipment

How to Reduce Exposure

  • Always wash hands thoroughly after handling firearms and ammunition
  • Use firearms in well-ventilated areas
  • Wear appropriate protective equipment when cleaning firearms
  • Follow all safety instructions provided by the manufacturer
  • Change and launder clothing after shooting sessions
