FFL Transfer Process

What is an FFL Transfer?

Federal law requires that all firearm sales between unlicensed individuals across state lines, and most commercial firearm sales, must be processed through a licensed Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL). This process includes a background check (NICS) and completion of ATF Form 4473.

How the FFL Transfer Works on WeaponDepot

1. Select Your FFL

During checkout, use our FFL Finder to select a licensed dealer near you. You can also enter your preferred FFL's information manually. The selected FFL will receive your firearm shipment.

2. Seller Ships to FFL

The seller ships the firearm directly to your selected FFL dealer. Firearms are always shipped FFL-to-FFL and never directly to a buyer's residence.

3. FFL Receives and Logs

Your FFL dealer receives the firearm and logs it into their bound book (acquisition and disposition record) as required by ATF regulations.

4. Background Check

Visit your FFL dealer to complete ATF Form 4473 and undergo the NICS background check. The dealer will verify your identity with a valid government-issued photo ID.

5. Take Possession

Once the background check is approved, you may take possession of your firearm. Some states may impose waiting periods before the firearm can be released to you.

FFL Transfer Fees

FFL dealers typically charge a transfer fee for processing incoming firearms. Transfer fees vary by dealer and are paid directly to the FFL at the time of pickup. These fees are separate from the purchase price and shipping costs on WeaponDepot.

State-Specific Requirements

Some states have additional requirements beyond the federal process, including state background checks, waiting periods, permits, and registration. Buyers are responsible for understanding and complying with their state and local laws. Visit our Gun Laws by State page for more information.
