Non-Paying Bidder
Handle buyers who win auctions but fail to complete payment, including filing claims and getting fee credits.
What Is a Non-Paying Bidder?
A non-paying bidder (NPB) is a buyer who wins an auction or commits to a fixed-price purchase but fails to complete payment within the specified timeframe. Non-paying bidders are a common challenge in online marketplaces, particularly for auction-style listings. When a buyer wins your auction, they enter into a binding agreement to purchase the item. However, some buyers fail to follow through for various reasons, including buyer's remorse, inability to complete the FFL transfer, or simply forgetting about the transaction. WeaponDepot takes non-paying bidder issues seriously and provides tools to help sellers recover from these situations.
Filing a Non-Paying Bidder Claim
If a buyer has not completed payment within the timeframe specified in your listing (typically 3 to 7 days), you can file a Non-Paying Bidder claim through your seller dashboard. Navigate to the order in question and select 'Report Non-Paying Bidder.' The system will send a payment reminder to the buyer with a final deadline to complete the transaction. If the buyer still fails to pay after the reminder period, the claim is escalated and you become eligible for a credit on any final value fees that were assessed on the transaction. The non-paying bidder may also receive a strike on their account, and repeated offenses can result in account restrictions or suspension.
Preventing Non-Paying Bidders
While you cannot completely eliminate non-paying bidders, several strategies can reduce their frequency. Enable the Checkout system so buyers can complete payment immediately after winning an auction. Set clear payment terms in your listings specifying when payment is due and what happens if payment is not received. Consider requiring immediate payment for fixed-price listings. Review bidder history and feedback before accepting bids from buyers with poor track records. You can also use the Block Bidders feature to prevent known problem buyers from bidding on your auctions. Building a reputation as a responsive, professional seller also attracts serious buyers who are more likely to complete their purchases.
